Slightly OT - Broken page
Can someone using ukfsn try to reach this page:
http://www.kara-moon.com/index.php?modid=mod06&l_submenu_id=m001_06_01
When I try I get the basic fixed layout, menu bar and a blank white
rectangle below. That rectangle should contain lots of forum
subsections.
The page works correctly for friends on {spit}BT, and friends in other
countries.
I can't believe it's something my end, as I've tried using three
different machines, and Opera V10, Firefox V3.0 & V3.5
The site moved servers last week, and I'm wondering if ukfsn hasn't
fully updated the DNS changes.

I'm not connected via UKFSN (any more), but via a Virgin Media
connection, I get the same plain white rectangle with no content.

That is what I get. Lokking at the source I suspect it's all that
script stuff that isn't supported by all browsers or check that:
<script language="JavaScript" src="../../milonic_src.js"
points to the right place,

Blank using Konqueror 3.5.10 and Firefox 3.0.15 from Zen.

I use VM but I run my own nameservers. I see the same blank menu. The DNS
appears to be correct, the Whois entry matches the delegation from the
GTLD servers and the answer given directly by the authoritative servers
matches the one my server delivers.
One thing looks suspicious - in the source, just where the missing content
should appear, is the comment: "<!- ADD section ->". Could it be that the
site has moved to the new host while the version on there is incomplete,
and your friends are seeing the old version due to caching in their ISPs'
nameservers or web proxies? Do they see the "Welcome to the *new*
Kara-Moon site" message?

Opera 10/Fedora 10 from UKFSN:
- The home page shows the blank rectangle.
- so do all entries in the menu under 'Forum'
- The 'Home' entry produces a dropdown menu starting with Auditorium.
There's no way I can find that returns me to the home page. I expect
'Home' to do that rather than showing a drop-down menu.
These all make me think that the site designed could have put a bit more
thought into the site design and construction - at the very least the
blank pages should say 'under construction' and hint at what they will do
when completed.
General points:
- several pages have spelling mistakes
- there is no contact information, not even a 'email us' link.
I'm not certain whether that's legal under current UK law,
but IMO it isn't good practice for any website.
The Sponsors page says its built with a new CMS package. The package does
a nice job with layout and appearance, but if any of the points I've
commented on are features of the CMS package, especially the behavior of
'Home' in the menu bar, then it needs some more work before its ready for
prime time.
If the CMS package doesn't have a built-in spelling checker, one should
be added ASAP, preferably with the ability to prevent miss-spelled pages
from being published. This last point comes from my own experience - I
really *hate* publishing pages with spelling errors because it looks so
careless.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I'm now pretty certain that the problem is missing scripts. All of you
have been looking at the page for the first time, and I have my
browsers configured to clear the cache on exit.
I've a strong feeling that all the other regular users of the site (none
of which seem to have a problem), aren't as fussy as me, so have the
necessary scripts still in their cache.
The site is run by non-native English speakers, so though I know there
are spelling mistakes I tend to let it pass.
It is a good point about not having an easily accessible contact
address and I will mention that when I email the site maintainer (like
in a few minutes time!)

It's the site that's broken, it doesn't work from here and I'm not on ukfsn
(either Demon or NTL). Konqueror and Firefox on Linux, and Firefox on
Windows all give the blank box symptoms described elsewhere.
IE8 on Windows gives content in the box but has
display_template template_id: tmpl_forum / mod06 for page_id p001_06_01
display_template template_source: tmpl_forum.php / mod06
at the top and:
ack! query failed:
errorno=1146
error=Table 'smf.tb_pages' doesn't exist
query=SELECT source_1 FROM tb_pages WHERE page_id = 'p001_06_01'
at the bottom. The presence of "(ns4)_d" in the code doesn't inspire me
with confidence that it's particularly up to date in how it identifies
browsers.

Re: Slightly OT - Broken page - Solved!
Found out that the pages have been named differently but the links from
the main page had not been updated.

There are still a few problems:
- the 'Home' button on the menu bar still doesn't do what it says
on the tin. It seems to default to the first item on the 'home'
drop down menu but I still find that annoying because its
unconventional behavior and 'Auditorium' is far from a natural
synonym for 'Home'.
- the initial and Forum pages all show the same blank page apart from a
line saying that the forum will appear on a pop-up.
- much more annoyingly, all that appears when one of these pages is
selected is a note on the status line saying that a pop-up was blocked:
clicking that shows me the forum page. This is happening because I have
Opera configured to suppress unwanted pop-up ads, but this is the only
site I've visited recently that behaves this way.
Could I strongly suggest that you don't use a pop-up. If you don't want
the forum to occupy the same window, then open another window rather
than using a pop-up. Most other sites do this via the
target="_blank" attribute of the <a> tag. AFAIK it works with
all browsers and they don't confuse it with an unwanted advertising
pop-up. I use similar settings with Firefox and it too blocked the
forum page pop-ups until I specifically allowed them for this site.
I bet I'm not the only person to use unwanted pop-up blocking.
NOTE: this setting doesn't block 'login' pop-ups on this or any other
site.
- all these forum-related pop-ups show the same Forum page. Are they
meant to do that?

If you want to see what lots of browsers do, see:
http://browsershots.org/http://www.kara-moon.com/index.php?modid=mod06&l_submenu_id=m001_06_01
Quite a variation!
(or try putting in the URL in http://browsershots.org/ if the images above

Thanks for your comments.
This isn't my website so I can only respectfully make suggestions. Also
the web designer is primarily a musician not a web designer, so one has
to maintain a balance :)
I was aware if some of the problems you found (the homepage in
particular) and will drip-feed these through.
The site was built up bit at a time over several years, and I think now
is the first time the whole thing has had a makeover. The guy has said
himself that he knows there are 'some' problems and is looking at them
as and when he has the time.
