Win7, install 32 or 64 bit?
I am on the point of installing Win 7 Pro which has been sitting on my
coffee table since the 2nd. Initially I had anticipated installing the
64 bit version, but I have now learnt that an application I like I has
issues with 64 bit.
The machine has dual core AMD 64 bit 2.8 GHz CPU and 4 GB RAM on an Asus
M3N-H/HDMI motherboard. Will I see much difference in performance
between 32 and 64 bit on this sort of kit? If not, I think it makes more
sense for me to hang on to my old software and stay with 32 bit for the
time-being.
Should I consider any other factors at this stage?

You have had it on your coffee table since the 2nd? Thats today innit?
Anyway if you do not mind losing a bit of useable RAM then by all means
install the 32bit version, there is no real performance difference
between 32 & 64 bit except for accessible RAM.

Would your application work in the virtual XP mode that comes with 7 pro?

For 2nd read 22nd, with cordless keyboard on the edge of its range :-)

There is some discussion on this, but it seems that it runs in XP mode
on 32 bit, but not 64. The application is Turnpike.

I used to use Turnpike in the dim and distant, nice app.
Doesn't look good for 64 bit running though, does it?

That's not the consensus of opinion in demon.ip.support.turnpike though.
TP works pretty well under the 32-bit version of W7 with some cosmetic
issues.
It doesn't run under the 64-bit version and there is no prospect of this
being fixed. It's a bug in W7 which Microsoft are aware of but probably
won't fix soon if at all.
TP runs in Virtual XP mode on W764 but that's not available in the
"home" versions of W7.
TP runs under earlier Windows versions in other virtualisation systems
but this is only permitted if you have a license for the client OS. If I
need to use TP under W764 I'll use virtual NT4 systems because I have
plenty of spare licenses for that and it's not a resource-hog.

Thanks for that summary Bernard.
I do have W7 Pro so I should be able to use XP mode. I guess I will be
best off going for 64 bit as then I will be able to add extra RAM if I
want that.
AIUI I will not see a performance difference between 32 and 64 bit with
my present kit. Are there any other issues affecting the choice?

Check the availability of 64 bit drivers, the situation is a lot better
than it used to be but worth checking.

Wireless network cars in particular seem to be a bit of a minefield with
respect to that, as far as my experience and investigations go.

Oh really?
I'm looking forward to seeing if TP5.02 works with that.
