Following on from "Need a new power supply..."
Just bought a new power supply from Maplin as suggested - i KNOW could get a
cheaper one elsewhere online, but wanted to get the machine working ASAP.
Machine is now back to life - power supply, CPU and graphics card fans all
running ok. However, when connecting to a monitor it reoprts "No Video
Input".
My suspicion is that the graphics card has gone too. Am I on the right
track? Is there an easy way to verify this considering that I do not have a
spare card to slot in?
Any help will be much appreciated.
TIA.
PS: in case it makes a difference - the machine was left running when we
left earlier yesterday morning, and was completely dead when we arrived in
the afternoon.

Does your graphics card have an additional power input and you forgot
to connect it? Just checking, as that's an easy thing to do.. If not, try
reseating the gfx card.

Just noticed the additional input... Red face all around...
Everything is now working!
Many thanks again.

You're welcome. It something I suspect most in this newsgroup have done
at least once - I know I have!

That's nothing. Yesterday a machine I was upgrading for someone would
POST, start to load the OS, then shut down. It took several tries before
I realised I had accidentally pulled off the CPU fan connector from the
MB!
Luckily I had built the machine originally, and had set the over-temp
shutdown in the BIOS to the lowest possible value, so the CPU survived.

set the over-temp
shutdown in the BIOS to the lowest possible value,
good idea duh!

Err... yeah.
All MB's I've seen with this feature either have it disabled, or set to
the *highest* value as a default. I've never seen a professionally built
machine that has had that changed...

Well, modern CPUs have built in thermal shutdown support with much
better reaction speed, so additional BIOS protection is not necessary.

P4 and AthlonXP, I think.

I share the same red face as I did the same myself once.

Most of the stuff I've built for others has been from my spares, from
Ebay, or from parts rescued from otherwise dead machines. I've provided
them mostly FOC to folk who either had no means to pay for a PC, or no
will to do so, in order to help them get an idea of the benefits.
These have mostly been Athlon XP 1800 to XP 3000 based. AFAIAW, they do
not have thermal shutdown on-chip.
P4's throttle I believe, but I haven't used so many of them.

Athlon XP and Sempron thermal shutdown is a one time function, indicated
by a little puff of smoke.
