Did anyone find out who Mark Whitby *really* was?
You remember the guy, the "water installation engineer from Brixton"
(what's one of those anyway?) who was on virtually every new bulletin
after the murder of the Brazilian guy on the Tube?
Did anyone find out who he really was?

I searched BT's directory:
People
* M Whitby in Brixton:
** nobody
* M Whitby in London:
** M (Maurice) Whitby - NW3 (just by Hampstead Heath)
** M M Whitby-Grub - SW16 (vaguely near Brixton)
Businesses
Several, but the relevant looking one is:
* M Whitby: 29 Perryn Road - W3 (Ealing, not near Brixton)
What about Yell?
Business name: Whitby
In: London
** An optician's, a pub, a firm of consulting engineers, and a
firm of surveyors. None in the right part of London.
OK, so we can't find a person by that name who lives in the right part
of London. What about Google? Can it tell us about water installation
engineers?
"Mark Whitby"
Gives a large number of hits, including some on a Mark Whitby who
established a firm of consulting engineers, Whitby Bird & Partners. This
firm is in the civil engineering sector, but the firm's offices are in
Marylebone W1, across the river from Brixton. I can't see a civil
engineer who has founded his own company being "from Brixton", really.
Here's the page: http://www.setnet.org.uk/cgi-bin/wms.pl/199
Here's something odd:
"Water installation engineer"
Gives no hits except the news reports about Mark Whitby... None. Nobody
else uses this term. Plumbers don't tart up their businesses by using
this term, civil engineers don't use it, nobody and nothing uses it - it
is only found in these reports.
So, no clue what a water installation engineer is. Is it just a
fancy-pants word for a plumber? Apparently not, because there are no
mentions of it, except the reports about this guy, to be found anywhere
on the Internet.

Is a 'water installation engineer' someone who 'takes the piss'? Sounds
like the sort of name and job title you would think up on the spur of
the moment. IOW looks like he is one of the surveillance team or has
been told what to say. He was reading a newspaper when he saw all this!
The following is quite interesting:
http://news.ft.com/cms/s/6aef8bb0-fb15-11d9-a0f6-00000e2511c8.html
Anthony Larkin, 30, a care assistant, was about to board a northbound
Victoria line train from Stockwell at about 10am. "Suddenly a whole load
of police officers appeared, some of them in uniform, some without
uniform, with guns drawn," he said. "They were shouting: 'Get down, get
down!'
"I froze. Then I heard two gunshots. People were screaming, shouting,
crying. I saw the guy. He had a beard, he was thin, Asian-looking. He
was trying to board a train."
Shortly after, Mr Larkin was reprimanded for talking to the media by
plainclothes Special Branch officers who then led him away to take a
statement.
IOW to coach him as to what to say. (Except it turned out he hadn't seen
anything). It gives some indication of the pre-processing of witnesses
which took place before the media has access to them.

I was inside the carriage when the first five shots went off and then I
heard another three as I was running up the stairs. I thought, theres
a gun battle going on.
So they shot him 5 times then paused and shot him another 3 times?

So if he was a police plant, he would have a better story then?

Where's the difference? Both could probably be correct!
