Do National Express coaches have walk-on fares?

Evening all!
I believe it's still possible to walk on to a National Express coach
and buy a ticket off the driver. How prudent is this?
I want to use NatEx to travel from Heathrow Airport, on a route with
almost hourly departures, and of course I can't be certain what time
my plane will land, or when I'll cle ...

Are bus inspectors a thing of the past?

Nottingham City Transport have bus inspectors but they never check
passengers' tickets. All their dealing seems to be with the driver
alone when they get on board. Is there therefore no check that the
passengers have tickets?
