Repair or scrap an engine?

Reading the post on another group about magneto rewinds prompted some
thoughts. While I cannot add a great deal to the magneto discussion, I
do find the question of engine value v rebuild cost interesting.
Should we be prepared to spend a considerable proportion of an
engine's current value on rebuilding it? As on ...

In another place I see a S****torm of argument between someone who has
rewound many magnetos and someone who hasn't. I know where my money is :-)
BTW the firm in Stroud do (or did a year ago) a rewind for ¡ê50 +vat.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what a Crossley 1075, driving a dynamo, a
wall mounted marble switchboard and a battery bank would have cost when
installed in (say) 1920?

Could I call on the experience of the group and ask:
Following a complete strip down, degrease and derust, would you -
a) Prime individual parts, reassemble and then apply under and top coats to
the complete unit including nuts?
b) Prime, undercoat and top coat individual parts and then reassemble.

A useful tool

For ages I've been trying to figure out how to torque up old nuts and
bolts. So far my options have been to replace them with new ones or
grab them with whatever will work and guess the torque.
Replacing them obviously looses the history and patina of the engine
and I know how important it is to keep things unrest ...
