Question pretty much as title: can anyone tell me how easy / cheap it is to retro-fit boom furling gear to a 32 foot yacht which currently has slab reefing ? Will it be possible to just fit a new boom or will a new main sail and mast be needed as well ? Thanks, David ...

UK round the top     Thu, 12 Nov 2009 05:35:07 -0800 (PST)
A friend has asked me to join him sailing his 30 footer round the north coast of Scotland from Oban to Peterhead. No date mentioned yet, but interested to hear views from those who've done the Pentland passage west-to-east before. When (window) would you plan the trip? And any suggested top stopping off points/s ...

Chirp, chirp     Thu, 12 Nov 2009 11:26:16 GMT
Chirp, chirp. Is it a bird? No, it's CHIRP, the Confidential Hazard Incident Reporting Programme, with which many of you will be familiar from their inserts which have accompanied some of the sailing magazines for the past few years. I'd like to hear the panel's views on the item entitled "Situational Awarene ...

House Batteries     Wed, 11 Nov 2009 00:30:15 -0000
My 'built to a price' Beneteau has eaten its first set of house batteries. They were branded 'Tudor' and I believe they are Indian made 'car batteries'. Does anyone have advice regarding a deep discharge replacement that is likely to last for 5 or more years I have my eye on Elecsol 85Ah batteries at the mom ...

There are now more Africans in England than in many African countries     Tue, 10 Nov 2009 10:33:33 -0800 (PST)
There are now more blacks in England than in many African countries, many of which are far larger than the UK. How far is England going to sink before the people wake up and turn on the politicians responsible? The Arabs weather bunker busters, stealth bombers and tomahawk cruise missiles and still they fight f ...

Bedding compound/sealant for aluminium fittings     Sun, 08 Nov 2009 10:24:35 +0000
A friend took of a cast Al fitting a while back and found the acid curing agent had badly corroded the fitting. I think he said he used Lifecaulk which, I seem to recollect, is a polysulphide. RTV silicone cures with the production of acetic acid and I know causes some corrosion - I have seen it. Duuno abou ...
