Costs from car fault - worth pursuing?

I bought a new car nearly 6 months ago and after 2 months it developed a
fault with the emissions control system that caused it to use more fuel than
it should otherwise have done. [1]
The garage accept that it's faulty and accept that it will have used more
fuel as a result but it's taken far too long (IMO) to ...

Is it in general possible to start a private prosecution as a litigant
in person ? What are the costs implications ?
I've heard it said that you can swear out a complaint of assault at
the Magistrates' court. Do you become the prosecutor then or is there
some different process ?
