Book recommendation

Hi there,
I'm looking to learn some basic book-keeping, with possibly going on
to learn further if I enjoy it. Can anyone recommend a book that I can
buy that will get me on the move?
I did two modules of Accounting & Finance at University about 8 years
ago, but want to resurrect my learning.

2 quick questions if I may
1) I was told before that if you are a '1 man band' it is best not to
charge the business for use of home as office - say 1/6 of electric /
rent / rates etc - as the house is rented there is no CGC potential -
but what might the other reasons for not doing it be - in the tax
man's vie ...
