Pages from Ceefax
Thu, 6 Aug 2009 23:36:59 +0100
The BBC seem to have invested in a new Teletext decoder for the playout of
late-night BBC2 Ceefax pages. The new one spreads the graphics over much
more of the screen area, and doesn't use PAL for its video output.
Perhaps they're feeling guilty because half the country won't be able to
access Ceefax directly i ...

maths graduate producers?
Thu, 6 Aug 2009 00:09:04 +0100
From an interview in the RT to do with the OU anniversary: "We used to
spend weeks planning the programmes and making all the models and then
we'd record a 25-minute show in about an hour. Luckily, all the BBC
producers were maths graduates, so they were able to turn all our batty
ideas into decent telly."

DRM on MSF?
Sun, 2 Aug 2009 07:49:45 +0100
This may sound like a bit of a crazy idea, but I wonder if DRM would work on
time signal stations like MSF or WWVB? You could add a whole load of extra
information to radio clocks, speech, music, news, weather forecasts,
something like ITV Nightscreen. Or display a series of landscapes as a
background to the clock ...

Could well be off topic: better tea
Sun, 2 Aug 2009 03:55:15 +0100
If you have to make two cups or mugs of tea, get one 'one cup' teabag and
hold it in a spoon. Make a small hole in the middle of the top surface of
the bag. Pour the boiling water slowly onto the teabag (which is still on
the spoon) putting about half a cupful into each cup, then do it again so
you have gone c ...

OSD displays and SECAM
Sat, 1 Aug 2009 23:21:15 +0100
When using PAL satellite and VCR equipment to receive SECAM signals, the OSD
display data causes major colour interference when the text is superimposed
on top of the picture.
Given that SECAM's subcarrier uses FM, which prevents two SECAM signals
being mixed together on top of one another, I'd assumed that t ...

Channel4 AFD policy
Sat, 1 Aug 2009 22:05:33 +0100
I've posted about Channel4's odd AFD policy on Freeview before.
(Basically all of their widescreen content carries the AFD for 16:9 deep
letterbox, even on material which is 14:9-safe and shown in 14:9 on
analogue.
This makes it difficult or impossible for 4:3 viewers with AFD-compliant
boxes to override and ...
