Child Over-protection
Mon, 20 Nov 2006 13:18:51 -0000
The following letter appears in the December edition of "Swimming" magazine
(the journal of the [British] Amateur Swimming Association). I would welcome
comments from around the world on other people's experiences in this regard.

Dear Sir,
The annual Sandown to Shanklin swim has, for t ...

Enthusiastic Amateurs
Sun, 19 Nov 2006 11:39:22 -0000
Jim and I have been insulting each other for some years now. This is
normally done at morning training, as we rarely see each other elsewhere to
do so. Also, having just fallen out of bed and in to the pool at 6 a.m.,
there is plenty of ammunition for well judged insults which are safe from
any action for slan ...

MP3 and Swim...
Sat, 11 Nov 2006 17:37:14 +0100
Hi there!
Since MP3-Players are already well spread, and got quite cheap, I am
looking for a solution to listen for some good music during my long
distance training.
Is it worth to buy such thing?
Have anyone already experience with any waterproof MP3-Players?
What about the headphones? Which type/model ...

Masters of the Universe
Sat, 11 Nov 2006 08:11:37 -0000
Although I have been a member of a Masters club for some time, I don't like
the term. I think it is inaccurate. The term 'Master' conjures up the vision
of some giant of the discipline whose towering achievements allow him or her
to excel in action and whose words of wisdom fall effortlessly from
sagacious lips ...

Morning Sickness
Sat, 4 Nov 2006 10:33:02 -0000
I vow over and over "never again", but next thing I know, there I am doing
it all over again. Morning training. That's what I mean, what did you think?
Before 6:00am I may look like a recidivist drunk but I'm actually doing it
for the state of my health. Come to think of it, at that time of the morning
I normall ...

Essential Equipment
Thu, 26 Oct 2006 22:36:05 +0100
Any parent will know, to their cost (literally), that a young swimmer's
street cred nowadays depends not on performance in the water, but on having
the right collection of equipment to take to the pool. Clothes must all have
the right logo, their other functions being of secondary importance. The
rest of the ...

Costume dramas.
Sun, 15 Oct 2006 09:56:43 +0100
Given the amount of money that costume manufacturers spend on advertising I
expect to be hunted down and drowned by Speedo. After all, if the pen is
supposed to be mightier than the sword, it is certainly dwarfed by the might
of that classic of literature, the chequebook. However, in case the
moderator of this g ...

Public Enemy No.1
Tue, 10 Oct 2006 15:10:24 +0100
I know I am preaching to the converted, because the sort of people who read
swimming news groups don't commit the sort of crimes I shall speak of. Most
readers won't be victims either, so bear with me while I look for a bit of
sympathy from the net's swimming elite, for an old splasher who has to swim
in publi ...

Who needs swimming coaches?
Wed, 4 Oct 2006 08:52:08 +0100
When I was small, I used to think that a coach was a large thing with four
wheels which was smelly and belched out smoke, took you all over the
country, cost a lot and made you sick. Since I have grown up (in body at
least), I realise I was wrong about the four wheels.
I know full well that it is probably a ...
