Sky+ HD functionality without subscription?

How much functionality does a Sky+ HD box retain if you don't maintain Sky+
subscription? I'm not a Sky subscriber but curious about the offer in Tesco
at the moment.
Does it lose all recording capacity and just become a Freesat receiver or
can you still record with it?
