Softmod xbox1 and live

I'm thinking of softmodding my xbox1 to get some more life out of it.
I've heard that if you go onto live with a soft-modded box you can get
banned. Will that ban my xbox, or my live account "asktoby"? I'm not
too bothered if the box gets banned but I'd be gutted if my gamertag
was banned.
