Sound problems

Ubuntu 9.04 on Toshiba L40 Satellite laptop.
The sound works OK through the speakers (if a bit low compared to
Windows) but doesn't work at all through the headphone jack nor does the
Mic jack appear to work.
The output of arecord -l is:

Converting Ubuntu 9.04 WUBI install to full install?

Would I gain any advantages by doing this? I currently have installed
Ubuntu 9.04 via WUBI in Vista Home Premium.
Would there be any performance advantage (say), or other benefits
compared to the time involved in taking backups of everything, ensuring
that all email had been converted from Outlook to Thunderbird (a ...

Just loaded (clean) Kubuntu 9.04 (had 7.x previously) but no matter what
I do either via the gui or terminal I can't configure dns.
This version appears not to use /etc/resolv.conf & adding one makes no
difference. Adding the relevant to /etc/network/interfaces same.
eth0 is 'up' but dns is bust

git/nano/Mac OS X Terminal

I'm learning to use git (from the command line, on a Linux server, via
the Mac OS X Terminal).
Each time I run:
git commit -a
git opens up the coment file in a version of nano. The problem with this
is that between it and my Terminal, there's a bug, and the displayed
