Setting default sink in .asoundrc
Tue, 9 Jun 2009 14:42:16 +0100
To play sound (at the cirrect pitch) over HDMI audio I have to use, for
example, aplay -D plughw:0,3 ...
How can I make plughw:0,3 the default in .asoundrc? The documentation
just consists of examples of things I don't want to do, with no
explanation of the syntax so I can modify them to what I want.

Liar. I've *never* seen it, outside of business settings. Plus, as
Tony said, with the big monitors now, it's getting to be a very
uninteresting option, for the **vast** majority.

Disappearing disk and filesystem

Ubuntu 8.04 system with two hard drives (sda and sdb). sda has / and
/home on it, along with swap and a couple of other bits of space left
over from a now deleted Windows XP install. sdb should have a single
large 250Gb ext3 filesystem populated mostly with media files - but
its gone missing!
Symptom: system fa ...

Setting default pulseaudio sink
Sat, 6 Jun 2009 01:16:29 +0100
How do you set the default sink in pulseaudio? I want to use HDMI audio
so I've added these lines to /etc/pulse/default.pa:
load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3
and
set-default-sink alsa_output.hw_0_3
but it always starts up using the analogue sink and source and I have to
change it to Digital ...

DVD rip to MPEG2 file?
Fri, 05 Jun 2009 19:04:14 GMT
Is there a tool that lets you select a track on a DVD and simply extracts
it from the DVD to a PC in its native MPEG2 format without transcoding it?
The reason I ask is that I've got a number of DVD-Rs that were created by
my DVD-recorder in standard DVD format, with the videos encoded into the
usual vob files, ...
