vanilla linux-friendly graphics cards?
18 Jun 2009 10:48:32 GMT
Any suggestions for cheap graphics cards that play well with Linux (in
the sense of not requiring closed-source, possibly buggy drivers, for
example). Needs to do up to 1280x1024 24-bit colour but no fancy 3-D games
or anything like that.
Needs to fit a standard PCI slot or there's a longer slot the

HP-150 laptop keyboard problems
Thu, 18 Jun 2009 10:18:21 +0000 (UTC)
Hi,
Bit of a weird one this: the HP-150 laptop I run Ubuntu 8.10 on has a
"function" key, which enables an alternate numeric keypad on top of the
existing one, so, for example, pressing "uio" with the function key
pressed will generate 456.
The problem is that my laptop appears to have a hardware problem w ...

OOo calc offset() function broken in OOo2.4.1?
17 Jun 2009 11:42:15 GMT
I have a spreadsheet I use for following bank accounts. Each row has
columns for amount_in, amount_out and balance. The balance row contains a
formula to take the offset of its own cell address -1 row (to get the
previous row's balance) + amount_in - amount_out.
e.g. OFFSET(F94;-1,0)+D94-E94
This used to work ...

nut - /etc/killpower not being created.
Mon, 15 Jun 2009 22:07:41 +0000 (UTC)
For the first time in a very long time I've actually had a powercut
today long enough for the UPS battery to go low and the machines to
shutdown.
Unfortunately, (or fortunately) the power came back on within a minute
or two of them shutting down and they didn't reboot.
Ah, I thought. Probably set in the bios ...

OT Britain is beginning to notice that the media and elites are,
curiously, far more obsessed with race and the BNP than they are..
Mon, 15 Jun 2009 12:15:00 -0700 (PDT)
Abstract
Even though the Jews are only 0.5% of the population in Britain, they
have an almost total grip on the media here, systematically,
constantly and intensely feeding their propaganda and example to
almost everyone in Britain, which is nothing new. With this media,
they are uniformly, deliberately, syste ...

Anyone know about starting sql-ledger?
Mon, 15 Jun 2009 17:29:43 +0100
After many struggles got sql-ledger more or less installed,
Can get the login screen OK, but when I try to access the admin screen
(http://localhost/sql-ledger/admin.pl) get: "users/members : Permission
denied".
I've fiddled with the permissions of all the obvious files, but to no avail.

dovecot not finding ~/Maildir/.folders
12 Jun 2009 20:49:30 GMT
I've got dovecot running on one of my debian (etch) machines. It's
configured (mainly with 'mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir' in
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) to serve maildir-formatted folders from users'
home directories. So far so good.
Building a fileserver I moved users' home directories to the server (a

Anyone here know about NFSv4 and UID/GIDs?
10 Jun 2009 18:17:05 GMT
Scratching around a bit here. I've asked on our local LUG and
comp.os.linux.misc and no-one seems to have any clue on this (least of all
me :-()
I'm exporting a filesystem via NFS4 from a Debian Lenny box, but when I
mount it on either my Debian Etch or Ubuntu Jaunty machines all my files
