DVD writer drive cannot read data CDs that it has created     Wed, 24 Sep 2008 09:00:49 +0100
I've replaced a defective DVD writer drive (could read/write CD-Rs but not CD-RWs) with a new one and installed Nero 7 that came bundled with it. The drive can successfully write data and audio CDs to CD-R and CD-RW but while it can play audio CDs that creates, it cannot read data CDs that it has created. ...

Have you ever seen a Vista PC where suddenly one day the initial Windows password (which has been used many times before) is deemed to be incorrect? It was the only user that was defined, and even in Safe Mode it was the only one offered - not like XP where Administrator is offered as an alternative in Safe Mo ...

Programs Requiring Non-Standard Rights     Wed, 10 Sep 2008 17:41:11 +0100
A real pet-peeve of mine is Windows applications which require non-standard access rights to run. I look after a few sites/servers/machines for different companies, and every time they get a specific piece of software I have to faff around with permissions. This is a pain as you have to remember what's set wh ...

Odd Firewall (?) Behaviour     Thu, 04 Sep 2008 16:48:57 +0000
Two XP home computers networked via a DG834 cabled router and# to the Internet. One computer (AA) sends a burst of data to the other (BB) every second, whether BB is switched on or not. I can see this via the lights on the router which represent the computer port flash in unison. I have isolated BB from ...

Vista reboots instead of shutting down or hibernating     Fri, 29 Aug 2008 09:04:27 +0100
A friend has reported that his new Vista PC has suddenly started rebooting itself whenever he tries to shut it down or hibernate it - it goes through all the normal shutdown/hibernate process but then instead of turning off the power (ie HDD and LEDs should go out) it boots up again. He's using ">" button on t ...

Internet Explorer gets makeover - IE 8 beta available     Thu, 28 Aug 2008 19:11:45 +0100
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7585741.stm I wonder if they will go back to the proper button bar that IE6 had, with all the buttons in a row, instead of putting reload, home and forward/back in different parts of the screen. And will they put the menu bar back where it belongs, above the button bar ...
