Well... I have the cpu Intel Core 2 duo...     Wed, 28 Oct 2009 23:09:52 +0000
Now I see there are more Asus mobos than there are molecules in the universe (I exaggerate slightly). Please folks - give me an actual Asus mobo code number that you would suggest the "best" (or at least a decent mobo) for this cpu. I can't afford to screw up buying this. Thanks Intel Core 2 duo, FSB 1333, Par ...

Windows 7 64-bit PCI wireless adapter woes / recommendation     Wed, 28 Oct 2009 15:46:05 +0000
I have a Netgear WG311 v2 PCI card which it seems just won't work under Win7 64-bit, no matter what I've tried. So, I'm on the lookout for a new one and so does anyone have any recommendations? I'm currently looking at an Asus WL-138gE which seems to at least have Vista 64-bit drivers and uses a Broadcom chi ...

Intel Core 2 Duo - what cooler?     Tue, 27 Oct 2009 23:08:26 +0000
I see there are a few new Intel Core 2 Duo's on ebay for about 2/3 the typical mainstream suppliers' price - however, they are sold without heatsink or fan. Are the "coolers" for this CPU fairly standard things (no strange fittings/dimension) ? thanks ...

iPlayer and Norton 360     Tue, 27 Oct 2009 21:23:46 -0000
I'm looking at a friend's computer to see if I can solve a conflict between Norton 360 - installed on the advice of PC World, as they told my friend that their existing Kaspersky wouldn't work with Vista! In my opinion, Norton is a virus that you pay for... Norton 360 seems to be preventing iPlayer from playi ...

Small lappy problem     Tue, 27 Oct 2009 18:37:54 GMT
Hi all, I've been given a lappy to take a look at. I admit, I've built and fixed a great many PC's, but hardly ever touch lappys. It's an ols Compaq Evo n800v The problem is, one I've never seen before. It starts to boot and the only way to describe it is 'the vertical hold goes on the blink'. The picture ...

What is everybody using for newsgroup access under Windows 7     Tue, 27 Oct 2009 11:37:36 -0700 (PDT)
Now that Windows Mail has gone and you cannot get it anymore, looks like another step by Microsoft to rid the world of newsgroup users. I am leaning towards Thunderbird as I use it on my iMac and am leaning away from Windows Live Mail as the last time I tried it, it was like using Outlook for newsgroups ie bloody ...

CDROM recognised as working, but get "Not Ready"     Tue, 27 Oct 2009 18:19:35 -0000
I have several CDROM drives and DVD drives. All of them are recognised by the OS, and Device Manager reports all of them working correctly. However, three of the drives do not access the media, and I get "Not Ready" when seeking to access the media. I'm curious how a CDROM drive does not work but PC reports ever ...

What do you think, will connecting a ST-225 HDD work?     Tue, 27 Oct 2009 17:47:21 -0000
I've got a PC setup for messing about with. The mobo is MSI-6119 (11 years old) that runs a Pentium II at 350 Mhz. I've installed Windows98. It has 2 ATA IDE sockets for the HDD's. I once ran a Seagate ST-225 (MFM type) HDD with an Amstrad 1512. I have the HDD controller type WD1002A-WX1. http://stason.org/T ...
