NAS instead of external HD
Wed, 21 Oct 2009 21:14:33 +0100
I am running out of space to store all of my films and music files on my
main PC. I presently have a 400Gb external disk and about 200Gb of internal
space for OS and documents etc. The external device I own doesn't shut off
so I power it on and off periodically when I want to use it. Unfortunately
this mean ...

Ebuyer not usual standard
Wed, 21 Oct 2009 12:25:45 -0700 (PDT)
I'm a bit perplexed. Ebuyer have apparently changed to use UPS as one
of their couriers. The other is Parcelforce. Now, any shipping option
I select on their web site (whether shorter, longer, or free shipping)
is changed to 3 working days. No other option is accepted.
I phoned their sales line and seemed to get ...

Flex ATX replacement mobo
Wed, 21 Oct 2009 18:17:29 +0100
I have a shuttle box with a dead Mobo. What would be the best option for
fitting a new one. Are there Flex ATX boards around, or would a Micro
ATX board fit instead. The box has a built-in heat-pipe cooler so the
new board would have to have the CPU in the same place as the existing
board.
I'm not committed ...

Win 7 and Networking
Wed, 21 Oct 2009 13:35:57 +0100
Not exactly homebuilding but related.
The reviews I have read mention the new (easy to set ) Networking in WIN7. But do mention this only works with Computer running Win 7 on the network. I hope I have assumed correctly that this only applies to some sort of settings transfer wizard and not that file and printer shar ...

Is it worth me upgrading?
Tue, 20 Oct 2009 23:44:17 +0100
By which I mean would I see a *noticable* improvement in processing
time and (with modest-but -newer video card), better graphics
rendering times?
I am way out of the loop on these things now - last upgrade was quite
a few years ago. Main use is running language compilers, some (not
super high power) CAD, some ...

OT: Don't you just hate those militant Scouse posties?
Tue, 20 Oct 2009 18:27:20 +0100
It always seems to be the Liverpool posties that cause all the issues.
You'd think that in an area where unemployment is higher than many,
they'd knuckle down to earn a living and stop rocking their 'rather more
stable than most' boat?
Why they feel they have a right to interfere with management running of

Quotes for file server and vpn
Tue, 20 Oct 2009 17:34:44 +0100
I believe there was a discussion here a while ago by a colleague about
requirements for our voluntary organisation to add a file server with
active directory and remote vpn to an existing network of 3 pcs.
For those of you who were interested in quoting for this job, the spec
is available here:

My real Microsoft Windows 7 arrived early!
Mon, 19 Oct 2009 17:57:27 +0100
The two copies of the genuine full version of Microsoft's new Windows 7 Home
Premium that I pre-ordered from PCworld for just ¡ê45 each, arrived this
morning! Three days early.
I certainly didn't expect them so soon as there is a threatened postal
strike later this week and they were scheduled by Royal Mail, I ...
