internet generally has been a lottery. Virgin's telephone support service
is carrying a message to the effect that there is a fault affecting several
ISPs and they are talking to their suppliers and hope to resolve the issue

service line confirms they know about the problem and are dealing with it.

Hi to old and new friends.
I'd given up on the Virgin groups, but just found this one.
I went over to virgin media via cable early in the year. NO probs so
far with b-b and the guys who connected it were excellent.
Speed stays just over 2 mb. I was so fed up with how slow the old
virgin.net b-b was getting. ...

illegally download music from the internet have received letters warning

Out of curiosity I just switched to news.virgin.net, which is still
there. All the groups have now gone except the virginmdia ones and they
are read only. Presumably some sort of marker for those who are not
aware of the change.
Also noticed that text.news.virginmedia.com appears to be a lot faster
than news.vi ...
